Rancho Santa Fe weekly sports update
• La Costa Canyon faced a tough test when it squared off against Escondido in the North County Classic finals.
The Mavericks passed with flying colors as they extended their winning streak to seven games — including winning all five games in the North County tournament — with a decisive 80-51 victory on Dec. 20.
Tommy McCarthy scored 23 points to lead the rout, and Travis Fuller added 23 points.
Brady Twombly contributed 15 points.
The Mavericks opened the tournament with a 79-45 victory over Rancho Christian on Dec. 15 in which McCarthy led the team with 20 points and Fuller added 20.
Fuller scored 21 points to lead LCC to a 59-44 win against Army-Navy on Dec. 17 and McCarthy scored 32 in an 80-64 victory over Kearny the next day.
The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 9-1.
• Torrey Pines didn’t get much of a break after winning the prestigious Horsman-Wolf Pack Tournament championship.
The Falcons didn’t need one.
They started the Sweetwater Lions Club Classic tournament a day after winning the Horsman-Wolf Pack title on Dec. 15 and showed no signs of slowing down as they extended their season-opening winning streak to nine games.
In their most recent game, they defeated Madison 70-49 on Dec. 19.
Jack Beach scored 26 points to lead the Falcons, and Marek Sullivan and Timmy Saunders added 16 and 13 points respectively.
The Falcons opened the tournament with a 67-35 victory over Steele Canyon on Dec. 17 in which Dominic Hovasse led the team with 14 points and Jackson strong scored 14 points.
Saunders scored 24 points to lead a 62-55 victory over Mira Mesa the next day.
The Falcons defeated St. Augustine 65-59 in the finals of the Horsman-Wolf Pack Tournament.
Hovasse scored 18 points to lead the Falcons and Saunders added 15 points.
Beach and Connor Milmoe added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Beach also had eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Milmoe was named the tournament MVP.
• San Diego Jewish Academy had its season-best four-game winning streak snapped as the Lions lost to Bonita Vista 60-17 in a nonleague game on Dec. 17.
The Lions were coming off a 46-38 nonleague win against Guajome Park Academy the previous day.
Jordan Battaglia scored 17 points to lead the Lions.
The Lions improved their overall record to 4-5.
• Santa Fe Christian extended its winning streak to five games as the Eagles opened the Grossmont tournament with two straight wins.
The Eagles defeated La Jolla 59-40 on Dec. 20.
They defeated Del Norte 62-42 a day earlier.
• La Costa Canyon extended its season-opening winning streak to seven games as the Mavericks rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to defeat Ramona 70-51 in a Maverick Invite game on Dec. 19.
The Mavericks had what seemed like a comfortable 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 24-12 in the second quarter.
They bounced back in a second half in which they outscored their opponent 38-15.
Taylor Pierce scored 23 points to lead the Mavericks and Rachel Dumiak added 16 points.
Kelly Reed contributed 11 points and Jessica Curtis and Cassie Amundson each added 10 points.
• Torrey Pines defeated Serra 66-46 in a Kiwanis tournament game on Dec. 20.
Sierra Campisano scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds, 14 blocks and four steals to lead the Falcons.
Madison Lombard added 22 points and Christina Ellis contributed 12 points.
The Falcons opened the tournament with a 66-27 victory over Oceanside as Campisano led the way with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Lombard scored 23 points and Campisano added 20 points in a 75-44 win against Westview on Dec. 18.
Campisano scored 27 points in a 69-55 loss to Helix the next day.
The Falcons went 3-1 in the tournament as they improved their overall record for the season to 8-2.
• Another week, another tournament championship.
So it goes for torrid Cathedral Catholic, which defeated Canyon of Anaheim 1-0 in the finals Dec. 20 of the prestigious Mater Dei Premier Invitational.
The Dons, who extended their season-opening winning streak to 10 games, were coming off winning the Butch Lee Memorial Tournament that they played host to.
The Dons advanced to the finals after defeating Woodrow Wilson of Downey 4-1 earlier in the day.
Sunny Dunphy and Emily Knepler each scored one goal to lead the Dons and Riley Marshall contributed one assist.
• San Dieguito Academy defeated Fallbrook 2-0 in a nonleague game on Dec. 19.
Lise MacPhee and Shayne Busick each scored one goal to lead the Mustangs and Juna Bouchekara and Miriam Bloom each contributed one assist.
Mustangs goalie Parker Rytz, who was credited with the shutout, had five saves.
The Mustangs improved their overall record for the season to 3-3-1.
• Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Buena Vista 3-1 in a nonleague game on Dec. 18.
Callie Petrey-Juarez, Cassidy McSkimming and Gianna Montini each scored one goal to lead the Falcons.
The victory followed a 1-0 nonleague win against El Camino two days earlier.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 3-1-1.
