Boys basketball:

La Costa Canyon presented Torrey Pines with one of the most formidable challenges the Falcons have faced all season.

The Falcons rose to the occasion in a 68-42 nonleague victory over the Mavericks on Jan. 19 in a game that showcased two of the top teams in San Diego County and two of the state’s Top 25 teams.

Sullivan scored 16 points and Beach added 13 points to lead the Falcons to a 64-31 victory over Mt. Carmel on Jan. 23 that extended their winning streak to nine games.

That win followed an 83-55 league opening victory over Westview on Jan. 21 in which Beach led the Falcons with 19 points and Timmy Saunders and Hovasse added 15 and 14 points respectively.

The Mavericks, ranked No. 25 in the same poll, bounced back from the loss to Torrey Pines with a 64-52 victory over El Camino in an Avocado League West opener on Jan. 23.

Travis Fuller scored 20 points to lead the Mavericks and Tommy McCarthy and Brady Twombly added 16 and 10 points, respectively.

The Falcons improved to 2-0 in league and 18-2 overall for the season.

The Mavericks improved to 1-0 in league and 13-6 overall for the season.


Santa Fe Christian snapped a four-game losing streak with a 68-64 victory over La Jolla Country Day in a Coastal League game on Jan. 23.

Jack Langborg scored 23 points to lead the Eagles.

The Eagles improved to 1-4 in league and 10-9 overall for the season.

Girls basketball:

Santa Fe Christian’s most recent victory may not have been the easiest, but it was probably the sweetest.

The Eagles extended their winning streak to 10 games with a dramatic 71-69 overtime victory over Bishop’s in a Coastal League game on Jan. 20.

The Eagles rallied from a 57-53 deficit after three quarters to send the game into overtime.

Megan Franke scored 25 points to lead the Eagles and Emma Dudley and Lindsey Almquist added 18 and 14 points, respectively.

California Cubel added 10 points.

The Eagles improved to 2-0 in league and 14-5 overall for the season.


Cathedral Catholic extended its winning streak to five games as the Dons made easy work of Mission Bay in a 65-38 Western League victory on Jan. 23.

Sarah Mosser scored 16 points to lead the Dons and Syndey and Alaina Alvarez each added 10 points.

Catherine Smedley contributed 14 rebounds and five blocks.

The victory followed a 74-46 league opening victory over Lincoln on Jan. 20 in which Alvarez led the Dons with 13 points and Nornes and Smedley added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Dons improved to 5-0 in league and 12-7 overall for the season.


La Costa Canyon opened Avocado League West play with a 64-36 victory over El Camino on Jan. 23.

Taylor Pierce scored 16 points to lead the Mavericks and Cassie Amundson and Rachel Dumiak each added 12 points.

The Mavericks improved to 1-0 in league and 15-4 overall for the season.

Christina Ellis scored 32 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Falcons and Sierra Campisano added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The loss followed a 49-42 win against Westview on Jan. 21 in which Campisano scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Falcons and Rachel Shen added nine points.

The Falcons improved to 1-1 in league and 12-7 overall for the season.

Girls soccer:

Cathedral Catholic defeated Our Lady of the Peace 3-0 in a nonleague game on Jan. 23.

Dana Dalton and Jessica Clegg each scored one goal and had one assist to lead the Dons and Sunny Dunphy contributed one goal.

The Dons improved to 15-5-2 overall for the season.


Torrey Pines defeated Mt. Carmel 6-0 in a Palomar League game on Jan. 23.

Jayda Hammermeister scored three goals to lead the Falcons and Nicole Buckley, Jordyn Garfein and Anissa Dadkhah each added one goal.

Falcons goalies Sherrie Antoun and Lucy Ferrari combined for the shutout.

The Falcons improved to 1-1 in league and 7-3-4 overall for the season.

Boys soccer:

Torrey Pines defeated Mt. Carmel 2-1 in a Palomar League game on Jan. 23.

Greg Matus scored one goal and had one assist and Matthew Botsford added one goal to lead the Falcons.

The victory followed a 5-2 win against Westview two days earlier in which Asher Booth scored one goal and one assist to lead the Falcons.

The Falcons improved to 2-0 in league and 11-4-3 overall for the season.
