The week in sports: Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach

Football:

• Santa Fe Christian defeated Rancho Christian 51-10 in a Coastal League opener for both teams on Sept. 18.

Conner Whitton completed seven of 15 pass attempts for 176 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Whitton also rushed for 56 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

R.J. Walker rushed for 77 yards on nine carries and Hank Ontiveros gained 57 yards and scored one touchdown on 13 carries.

Caleb Phillips caught two passes for 67 yards.

Demitri Washington led the Eagles defensively with 12 tackles and two sacks, and Phillips added 10 tackles.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 3-1.

• La Costa Canyon defeated Rancho Bernardo 27-13 in nonleague game on Sept. 18.

Zachary Goodkin rushed for 128 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries to lead the Mavericks and quarterback Tanner Clark threw for 175 yards. Clark rushed for two touchdowns.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 3-1.

• San Diego Jewish Academy lost to St. Joseph’s Academy 70-48 in a nonleague game on Sept. 17.

Lions quarterback Jordan Battaglia completed 16 of 32 pass attempts for 284 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Battaglia also rushed for 116 yards on 15 carries.

Rami Lieberman rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Hunter Kahn caught six passes for 120 yards with no score.

• Torrey Pines lost to Westview 10-7 in a nonleague game on Sept. 18.

The Falcons fell to 1-3 overall for the season.

• Cathedral Catholic lost to Felix 37-7 in a nonleague game on Sept. 18.

The Dons fell to 1-3 overall for the season.

Volleyball:

• Cathedral Catholic defeated Santa Fe Christian 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) in a nonleague match on Sept. 16.

Lauren Woodard had 15 kills to lead the Dons and Megan Faraimo added nine kills.

• San Dieguito Academy won its 11th straight match to start the season as the Mustangs defeated Carlsbad 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-15) in a nonleague match on Sept. 18.

Sarah Colla had 13 kills to lead the Mustangs and Emily Kimball added 10 kills).

Megan Scherer had 17 assists for the Mustangs and Lindsey King added eight kills.

Lexi Dorn had 33 assists.

The Dons improved to 9-1 overall for the season. The Eagles fell to 6-4.

Field hockey:

• La Costa Canyon defeated Vista 4-0 in the championship game of the Serra tournament on Sept. 19.

Nina Randolph had three assists to lead the Mavericks and Summer Borsack, M. Peterson and Jenna Greer the said.

Mavericks goalie Jodi Steigerwald had four saves.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 7-0.

• Torrey Pines went 3-0 in a Serra High pool play tournament on Sept. 19.

They defeated La Jolla 2-0 in its last game as Gabriella “Gabi” Jimenez and Meaghan Donnelly each scored one goal and Rylie Pope and Ryan Poe each added one assist.

Falcons goalie Jaden Watkins had two saves.

The Falcons opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Rancho Buena Vista in which Jimenez and Zari Edlin each scored one goal and Pope had one assist.

They also defeated Helix 7-0 as Jimenez scored three goals and had two assists to lead the rout.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 7-0.
