The week in sports: Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach
Baseball:
• Torrey Pines got another exceptional pitching performance as the Falcons defeated Mt. Carmel 1-0 in a Palomar League game on May 2.
The Falcons have recorded shutouts in four of their last five games. They’ve shut out opponents in six of their last nine games, going 7-2 over that span.
Joshua Sidney pitched seven innings of three-hit ball in the Falcons’ most recent win. He struck out seven batters and allowed no walks.
Cole Klemke’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning brought home Logan Tomlinson for the only run the Falcons needed.
The victory followed a 2-0 win against Mt. Carmel two days earlier in which Chase Cameron tossed a complete game two-hit shutout.
Tomlinson had two hits and two RBI, and Christian Gange had two hits, including a double, to lead the Falcons offensively.
The Falcons improved to 6-2 in league and 15-7-1 overall for the season.
• Cathedral Catholic trounced Scripps Ranch 9-1 in an Eastern League game on April 30.
John Cresto had two hits, including a double, and three RBI, and Michael Guerena had two hits and two RBI.
Jonathan Pendergast, who was credited with the victory, pitched six innings of five-hit ball. He had three strikeouts and one walk.
The Dons improved to 4-1 in league and 13-8 overall for the season.
• A day after seeing its seven-game winning streak snapped, Santa Fe Christian bounced back.
The Eagles left nothing to chance in an 8-0 Coastal League victory over Horizon Christian Academy on May 1.
The victory followed a 4-2 loss to La Jolla Country Day in a league game on April 30 in which Cole Weaver led the Eagles, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI.
The Eagles improved to 7-1 in league and 20-4 overall for the season.
• La Costa Canyon completed a three-game Avocado League West sweep of Rancho Buena Vista with a 5-4 victory on May 2.
Shane Potter homered twice and drove in three runs to lead the Mavericks. Ryan McClure and Ryan Orr each added two hits.
The Mavericks improved to 5-1 in league and 19-4 overall for the season.
• Canyon Crest Academy lost to Rancho Bernardo 7-3 in a Palomar League game on May 2.
Tommy Kuznia went 3 for 4 with a triple, two doubles, and a walk in defeat for the Ravens. He drove in one run and scored another.
The Ravens fell to 2-6 in league and 6-15 overall for the season.
• San Dieguito Academy defeated San Marcos 4-3 in an Avocado League East game on April 30.
Christian Hendricks had two hits, including a double, and Eric Vela had two hits and two RBI to lead the Mustangs.
The victory followed an 8-6 league win against San Marcos on April 30 that snapped a 12-game losing streak.
Bo Templin, Dustin Sleet and Austin Keillor each had two hits to lead the Mustangs, and Hendricks added a double and two RBI.
The Mustangs improved to 2-6 in league and 5-16 overall for the season.
Softball:
• Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Bernardo 1-0 in a Palomar League game on May 1.
Kiley Rose pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Falcons.
Mikaila Reyes led the Falcons offensively with two hits including a double and one RBI.
The victory followed a 5-4 league win against Poway two days earlier in which Shelbianne Evans, Xstaviana Augur and Belanie Nagiel each had two hits.
The Falcons improved to 5-1 in league and 13-6 overall for the season.
• Cathedral Catholic defeated University City 13-3 in an Eastern League game on April 30 as the Dons extended their winning streak to five games.
The Dons improved to 8-1 in league and 19-6 overall for the season.
Girls lacrosse:
• Torrey Pines defeated Carlsbad 15-7 in an Avocado League West game on April 28.
Taylor Scornavacco scored three goals and had one assist to lead the Falcons.
Lexi Kaplan scored two goals and had one assist, Nicole Morris added two goals and one assist, and Alex Rasmussen andMarisa Kuberra each contributed two goals.
The Falcons improved to 6-2 in league and 12-5 overall for the season.
• Canyon Crest Academy defeated Carlsbad 16-4 in an Avocado League West game on May 1.
Rayna Higuchi scored four goals and had three assists to lead the Ravens.
Ally Deremer scored four goals and Alexa Carter added three goals and one assist.
The Ravens improved to 5-4 in league and 12-7 overall for the season.
• Santa Fe Christian defeated El Camino 12-4 n a Coastal League game on May 2.
Aislinn Mahony and Brianna Healy each scored three goals to lead the Eagles and Sienna Verdult added two goals and two assists.
The victory followed a 17-1 win against Del Lago Academy in a league game the previous day.
Hollie Pelland scored four goals and had one assist to lead the Eagles.
Georgia Pace and Mahony each added three goals and one assist.
Eagles goalie Alex Holmes had four saves.
The Eagles improved to 6-3 in league and 9-8 overall for the season.
