The week in sports: Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach
• San Diego Jewish Academy is off to a roaring start.
SDJA extended its winning streak to nine games as the Lions defeated Chadwick of Palos Verdes Peninsula 3-1 in the Lions Club tournament A-Plus Division championship game on April 2.
Lions starter Jordan Battaglia, who was credited with the victory, pitched four shutout innings of no-hit ball in which he struck out four batters and allowed three walks.
Isaac Shoshoni had two hits, and Cody Brown doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Lions offensively.
The title game victory followed a 12-1 thrashing of El Cajon Valley in an April 1 semifinal game.
Jake Berkson had two hits, including a double and three RBIs, to lead the Lions.
Brown, Shoshoni, Aaron Perez, and Hunter Kahn each contributed two hits.
Lions starter Sebastian Mayer, who was credited with the victory, allowed one unearned run in five innings of one-hit ball.
The Lions went 4-0 in the tournament, outscoring their opponents by a combined 41-6.
They improved their overall record for the season to 10-1.
• After two straight losing seasons, Torrey Pines is off to an 8-4-1 start after reaching the Lions Club tournament Premier Division championship game.
The Falcons lost to Grossmont 4-3 in the April 2 championship game. Jake Singer homered and drove in two runs to lead the Falcons, and C.J. Stubbs contributed a solo homer.
The Falcons reached the finals after defeating San Ysidro 5-2 in the semifinals earlier in the day, in which Stubbs tossed a five-hit complete game in which he struck out four batters and allowed one walk.
Stubbs also led the Falcons offensively, going 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI.
• La Costa Canyon lost to Chaparral of Temecula 6-5 in a Lions Club tournament Classic Division championship game on April 2 that went eight innings.
The loss snapped a nine-game Mavericks winning streak.
The Mavericks advanced to the finals after defeating Cathedral Catholic 11-5 in a semifinal game earlier in the day.
The Mavericks went 4-1 in the tournament as they improved their overall record for the season to 12-2.
Cathedral Catholic defeated Helix 6-4 in a tournament quarterfinal on April 1 in which John Cresto had two hits including a double and two RBI to lead the Dons.
Toru Sugiura and Griffen Case each added two hits.
The Dons went 3-1 in the tournament as they improved their overall record for the season to 8-5.
• Santa Fe Christian lost to Bullard of Fresno 3-1 in the Lions Club tournament 6A Division semifinals on April 2.
Luke Vandertie and Ari Gerber each had two hits in defeat for the Eagles.
The loss followed a 2-1 Eagles’ victory over Acalanes of Lafayette (Contra Costa County) in an April 1 quarterfinal game.
Matt Pierson notched his first career varsity victory as he started the game and pitched 5 1/3 innings of six-hit ball.
Cole Weaver had a double and two RBI to lead the Eagles offensively.
The Eagles went 3-1 in the tournament as they improved their overall record for the season to 11-3.
• San Dieguito Academy lost to Monte Vista 2-1 in a Lions Club tournament Division 4A game on April 1.
Jacob Aere, Shay O’Laughlin and Bo Templin each had two hits in defeat for the Mustangs.
Mustangs starter Eric Vela took the loss despite a solid complete game effort. He allowed two runs (both unearned) on two hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings.
The Mustangs fell to 3-8 overall for the season.
• Cathedral Catholic extended its winning streak to eight games as it defeated Port of Los Angeles of San Pedro 8-0 in the championship game of the Las Vegas Spring Jamboree on April 4.
The Dons went 5-0 in the tournament as they outscored their opponents by a combined 40-3.
The victory followed a 3-2 win against Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) in a semifinal earlier in the day.
The Dons opened the tournament with an 11-1 victory over Green Valley (Henderson, Nev.) on April 2 and defeated Buena of Ventura 10-0 later in the day.
They beat Palo Verde of Las Vegas 8-0 on April 3.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 12-5.
• La Costa Canyon defeated Canyon Crest Academy 13-11 in an Avocado League West game on April 3.
Genesis Lucero scored four goals and had three assist to lead the Mavericks and Caroline Ricci added four goals.
The Mavericks improved to 3-0 in league and 9-2 overall for the season.
The Ravens fell to 1-1 in league and 7-2 overall for the season.
