Boys basketball:

The team that gave Cathedral Catholic the biggest scare during its unbeaten Western League run once again gave the Dons a pretty good game.

But it wasn’t enough to stop red-hot Cathedral Catholic, which broke open a one-point halftime lead on its way to a 72-61 league win against St. Augustine on Feb. 5.

The Dons’ 56-53 victory over St. Augustine on Jan. 16 is their narrowest league win to date.

Reid Johnson scored 24 points to lead the Dons. Austin Beech added 19 points and Brandon McCoy contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The Dons led 35-34 at the intermission. They broke open a 50-47 lead going into the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponent 22-14 the rest of the way.

The Dons improved to 9-0 in league and 16-4 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines defeated Poway 56-50 in a Palomar League game on Feb. 5.

Jackson Strong scored 13 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Falcons and Steven Hickman added 10 points.

The victory followed a 72-48 league win against Mt. Carmel three days earlier in which Jacob Gilliam led the Falcons with 21 points and Hayden Helfrich added 10 points.

The Falcons improved to 6-0 in league and 19-4 overall for the season.

San Diego Jewish Academy moved into a two-way tie for first place in the Ocean League as the Lions defeated previously unbeaten Guajome Park Academy 67-63 on Feb. 3.

Jordan Battaglia scored 21 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Lions and Cody Brown added nine points.

Carmelo Xia contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The victory followed a 68-28 win against Rock Academy two days earlier in which Battaglia led the Lions with 20 points and Brown added 18 points.

Sam Deverett contributed 10 points.

The Lions improved to 5-1 in league and 13-9 overall for the season.

La Costa Canyon defeated Sage Creek 54-46 in an Avocado League West game on Feb. 5.

Drew Mead scored 20 points to lead the Mavericks.

The Mavericks improved to 4-2 in league and 14-9 overall for the season.

Girls basketball:

Torrey Pines lost to La Jolla Country Day 67-45 in a nonleague Coaches vs. Cancer game at The Bishop’s School on Feb. 6.

Sierra Campisano scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds in defeat for the Falcons. Isabella Hoang added 12 points.

The loss followed a 64-40 Palomar League win against Poway the previous day in which Campisano led the Falcons with 29 points and eight rebounds.

Meghan Voss added 16 points and six rebounds.

Campisano scored 24 points and had 20 rebounds in a 59-38 league victory over Mt. Carmel on Feb. 2. Hoang and Rachel Shen each added 10 points.

The Falcons improved to 5-1 in league and 17-6 overall for the season.

La Costa Canyon defeated Sage Creek 59-19 in an Avocado League West game on Feb. 5.

Cassie Amundson scored 21 points to lead the Mavericks and Jessica Curtis and Colleen Haggerty added 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Mavericks improved to 5-1 in league and 16-8 overall for the season.

Cathedral Catholic lost to Mount Miguel 64-25 in a nonleague Coaches vs. Cancer game on Feb. 6.

Kaylee Stiffler led the Dons with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The defeat followed a 68-60 Western League Loss to Our Lady of the Peace the previous day in which Stiffler led the Dons with 18 points and 22 rebounds.

Skyler Pierce added 13 points and eight steals, and Catie Moran contributed 10 points.

Pierce scored 12 points to lead the Dons to a 43-36 league win against La Jolla on Feb. 2.

Erin Tabornal added 10 points.

The Dons fell to 4-5 in league and 6-16 overall for the season.

Girls soccer:

Cathedral Catholic defeated Canyon Crest Academy 2-0 in a nonleague Cure for Cancer Cup game on Feb. 5.

The Dons extended their winning streak to five games and are unbeaten in their last 10.

Mikayla Kappes and Dana Dalton each scored one goal to lead the Dons and Olivia Erlbeck had one assist.

Erin Kelly and Kelli McCarthy combined for the shutout.

The victory followed 6-1 Western League win against Coronado on Feb. 4 in which Sunny Dunphy scored two goals and had two assists and Taylor Sparks scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Dons.

Two days earlier, the Dons defeated University City 4-0.

Bianca Caetano scored two goals to lead the Dons. Kelly and McCarthy combined for the shutout.

The Dons improved to 6-0 in league and 16-3-3 overall for the season.

Christina Bragado added one goal and Callie Petrey-Juarez contributed one assist.
