With the opportunity to clinch an Avocado League championship within its grasp, La Costa Canyon left nothing to chance.

The red-hot Mavericks jumped out to an early four-run lead and never looked back as they defeated Carlsbad 7-0 in a league game on May 14.

The Mavericks completed a three-game sweep with the victory as they extended their winning streak to 13 games.

Austin Merrill tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Mavericks. He struck out six batters and allowed no walks.

The Mavericks scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to break a scoreless tie.

Reed Labar had two hits including a double to lead the Mavericks offensively.

LCC opened the series with a 7-2 victory on May 10 in which Gabe Wiles had three hits and Brandon Bay had two hits and two RBI.

Two days later Mickey Moniak had two hits and three RBI to lead the Mavericks in a 9-0 win over Carlsbad.

Mavericks starter Nick Scheidler, who was credited with the victory, scattered seven hits in six innings, combining with Bucky Hawk on the shutout.

The Mavericks improved to 13-1 in league and 22-5 overall for the season.

A hard-fought Eastern League victory was well worth the effort for Cathedral.

The Dons went 12 innings in a 5-4 victory over Patrick Henry on May 13 that kept them in sole possession first place.

The Dons held a half game lead over Scripps Ranch going into the last week of the regular season.

Connor Lunn and Jacob Allred each had three hits to lead the Dons.

Cole Mueller contributed two hits and two RBI and Quinn Hoffman and Jordan Chang each added two hits.

The Dons rallied from a 4-1 deficit going into the bottom of the fifth inning to send the game into extra innings.

Jordan Chang pitched seven shutout innings in relief of starter Sam Miller.

Chang struck out six batters and allowed five hits and one walk.

The victory followed a 4-1 win against Patrick Henry two days earlier in which Connor Lunn pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Dons. Lunn struck out 10 batters and allowed no walks.

Bradley Polinsky had two hits including a double and two RBI to lead the Dons offensively and Kai Walter added two hits.

The Dons improved to 7-4 in league and 20-9 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines defeated Canyon Crest Academy 5-0 in a Palomar League game on May 13 in the deciding game of a best-of-three series.

Kyle Hurt pitched six shutout innings of five-hit ball to lead the Falcons.

Hurt struck out 10 batters and allowed two walks.

James Rutledge and Evan Trausch each had three hits to lead the Falcons offensively and Ryan Bramlett added a solo homer.

Trausch had two doubles.

Nick Spadone had two hits in defeat for the Ravens.

The Falcons opened the series with a 8-7 win on May 10 in a game that went nine innings.

James Rutledge went 2 for 5 with a home run and a double and Bennett McCaskill had two hits including a double and one RBI to lead the Falcons.

Alex Rejto and Arjun Nichani each had two hits and two RBI in defeat for the Ravens.

The Ravens bounced back two days later behind a stellar pitching performance from Matt Spencer for a 2-1 victory.

Spencer pitched a complete-game five-hitter in which he struck out seven batters and allowed three walks.

M.J. Metz was 1 for 3 with two RBI to lead the Ravens offensively.

The Falcons improved to 8-6 in league and 18-10 overall for the season.

The Ravens fell to 3-10 in league and 15-12 overall for the season.

Santa Fe Christian split a two-game Coastal League series with La Jolla Country Day.

The Eagles opened the series with a 5-3 victory on May 10.

Kyle Ferraro pitched a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Eagles and Van Coykendall and Chet Moody each had two hits to lead the Eagles offensively.

Ferraro had three hits in defeat for the Eagles in a 7-4 loss to LJCD on May 12.

The Eagles fell to 8-4 in league and 17-9 overall for the season.

Softball:

Torrey Pines concluded regular season play with a 7-3 Palomar League victory over Canyon Crest Academy on May 12.

Kristin Bitter had three hits including a triple to lead the Falcons.

Makena Macias, Cassie Kaelber, Belanie Nagiel and Xstaviana Augur each added two hits.

The victory followed an 8-1 loss to Poway two days earlier that spoiled the Falcons’ perfect league season.

The Falcons improved to 9-1 in league and 23-4 overall for the season.

‬Tennis:

San Dieguito Academy defeated San Diego High 12-6 in the San Diego Section Division II championship game on May 7 at Barnes Center.

The Mustangs championship was the program’s first in more than 20 years.

The Mustangs were led by No. 1 doubles teammates Kyle Bone and Cole Urcelay, who were 17-4 on the season.

The Mustangs got solid contributions from players whose versatility allowed longtime SDA coach Joe Tomasi the flexibility to rotate them in singles and doubles roles.

Key contributors included Jacob Bear, Cruz Martinez, Cole Bridges, Cole Urcelay and Kyle Bone.

Bear and Martinez are freshmen.
