Boys basketball:

Cathedral Catholic’s amazing run is over.

The Dons lost to Bishop Montgomery 72-56 in a Southern California Open Division Regional semifinal on March 15.

The Dons trailed by just four points going into the fourth quarter, but the Knights broke the game open with a 3-point shooting barrage, outscoring their opponents 26-14 the rest of the way.

Brandon McCoy scored 23 points and had eight rebounds in defeat for the Dons and Austin Beech added 12 points.

The Dons fell to 21-7 overall for the season.

Baseball:

Canyon Crest Academy traveled the tough road on its way to the Bully’s Tournament championship game with a pair of white-knuckle victories.

But once they got to the finals, pitching standout Matt Sallee took the Ravens for a ride on Easy Street.

Sallee pitched a five-hit shutout to lead the Ravens to a 3-0 victory over Hoover in the title game on March 19.

Sallee faced just 25 batters and allowed no walks.

The red-hot Ravens extended their season-opening winning streak to six games.

Drew Johnson and Nick Spadone each had two hits to lead the Ravens.

The Ravens scored one run in the fifth inning that broke a scoreless tie and extended their lead with a two-run rally in the sixth.

The victory followed a pair of extra-inning wins.

The Ravens went 11 innings in a 5-4 win quarterfinal win against Horizon Christian on March 14 in which Johnson and M.J. Metz each had two hits.

Three days later Alex Rejto had two hits (both doubles) and two RBI and Arjun Nichani went 1 for 3 with a double and three RBI in a 7-3 semifinal win against Clairemont that also went 11 innings.

San Diego Jewish Academy continues to have its way on the small-school circuit.

The Lions extended their season-opening winning streak to five games with a 25-0 shellacking of Lutheran of Chula Vista on March 17.

Cody Brown went 1 for 3 with a double and three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Lions offensively.

Jordan Battaglia, who was credited with the victory, struck out six batters in two innings.

The victory followed a 16-0 thrashing of Tarbut V’Torah two days earlier in which Brennan Rubin went 2 for 2 with two doubles and four RBI.

Rubin, who was credited with the victory, struck out 10 batters and allowed no walks in four innings of one-hit ball.

Torrey Pines put the hurt to Fallbrook in a 5-1 nonleague victory on March 15.

Literally.

Kyle Hurt homered and drove in three runs to lead the Falcons.

Hurt, who started and was credited with the victory, struck out nine batters and allowed one walk in six innings of three-hit ball.

Sean Bingham and Murray Kim each added two hits.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 4-1.

La Cost Canyon defeated Rancho Buena Vista 5-0 in a Hilltop Tournament game on March 17.

Nick Scheidler, who was credited with the victory, pitched six shutout innings of four-hit ball.

Micky Moniak and Ryan Orr each had two hits to lead the Mavericks offensively.

The victory followed a 10-0 tournament win against El Capitan two days earlier in which Brendan Kawaja pitched a four-hit shutout. Kawaja struck out four batters and allowed no walks.

Blake Miller was 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBI.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 4-1.

San Dieguito Academy defeated Escondido Charter 4-0 in a Pirate Classic Tournament game on March 15.

Jake Fosgett pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the Mustangs.

Fosgett struck out six batters and allowed one walk.

Ryan Martinez and Matt Shearin each had two hits to lead the Mustangs offensively.

The Mustangs improved their overall record for the season to 3-2.

Santa Fe Christian lost to La Jolla 7-3 in a Bully’s Tournament game on March 19.

Murphy Stehly had three hits to lead the Eagles and Will Locken and Daniel Hoppen each added two hits.

The loss followed a 2-0 tournament victory over Central of El Centro (Imperial County) in which starter Chet Moody pitched five innings of no-hit ball to lead the Eagles.

Moody struck out two batters and allowed one walk.

The Eagles fell to 5-2 overall for the season.

Softball:

Torrey Pines defeated La Costa Canyon 6-5 in a North County Tournament game on March 19.

The Falcons improved to 8-1 overall for the season.

Girls lacrosse:

Cathedral Catholic defeated Coronado in a City League game on March 18.

Bridget Knowles scored eight goals to lead the Dons.
