Boys basketball:
A Cathedral Catholic team that’s already established itself as the class of the Western League went up against a perennial Southern California power at Real Run SD-LA Challenge.
The Dons rose to the occasion with an impressive 75-59 nonleague victory over Narbonne of Harbor City on Jan.30 that extended their winning streak to eight games.
Brandon McCoy scored 21 points to lead the Dons and Austin Beech added 13 points.
Reid Johnson and Cam Moore added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The victory followed an 84-34 league win against University City the previous day in which McCoy led the Dons with 19 points and Beech and Je’von Figaro added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Dons also defeated Lincoln 83-49 in a league game on Jan. 26 in which McCoy led the team with 21 points.
The Dons improved to 7-0 in league and 14-4 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Bernardo 75-61 in a Palomar League game on Jan. 26.
Jackson Strong led a balanced Falcons offense with 17 points.
Jack Heller added 13 points and Hayden Helfrich and Jacob Gilliam each contributed 12 points.
Steven Hickman scored 10 points and Dylan Bona contributed nine points.
The Falcons improved to 3-0 in league and 16-4 overall for the season.
La Costa Canyon defeated Carlsbad 66-40 in an Avocado League West game on Jan. 29.
Drew Mead and Logan Wazny each scored 12 points to lead the Mavericks and Graham Cook added 10 points.
The victory followed a 57-35 league win against Rancho Buena Vista two days earlier in which Mead led the Mavericks with 15 points.
The Mavericks improved to 3-1 in league and 13-8 overall for the season.
San Diego Jewish Academy defeated Classical Academy 55-43 in an Ocean League game on Jan. 27.
Jordan Battaglia led the Lions with 26 points and Cody Brown added 19 points.
Battaglia also contributed six rebounds, five assists and seven steals.
The victory followed a 57-52 win against St. Michael’s Prep two days earlier in which Brown led the Lions with 26 points and Sam Deverett added 11 points.
The Lions improved to 3-1 in league and 11-9 overall for the season.
Girls basketball:
Torrey Pines defeated Canyon Crest Academy 79-42 in a Palomar League game on Jan. 29.
Sierra Campisano scored 38 points and had 20 rebounds, five blocked shots and five assists to lead the Falcons.
Rachel Shen and Angelina Roque added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The victory followed a 68-42 league win against Canyon Crest Academy on Jan. 26 in which Campisano led the Falcons with 35 points and 12 rebounds and Isabella Hoang added 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
The Falcons improved to 3-1 in league and 15-5 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic lost to University City 50-30 in a Western League game on Jan. 29.
Rose Smedley scored six points and had seven rebounds in defeat for the Dons. Catie Moran contributed six points and six rebounds.
The Dons fell to 3-4 in league and 5-14 overall for the season.
Girls soccer:
Two days after experiencing their first loss of the season, Torrey Pines came back with a vengeance.
The Falcons defeated Canyon Crest Academy 4-0 in a Palomar League game on the heels of having their 12-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Amber McCorkle, Katie Dove and Callie Petrey-Juarez each scored one goal to lead the Falcons.
Daniela Nelson, Grace Carter and Nicole Buckley each contributed one assist.
Falcons goalie Sherrie Antoun was credited with the shutout.
The victory followed a 2-1 league loss to Rancho Bernardo in which Petrey-Juarez scored the Falcons’ only goal off an assist from Nelson.
The Falcons improved to 2-1-1 in league and 8-1-4 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian defeated Tri-City Christian 7-0 in a Coastal League game on Jan. 30.
Katie Becknell and Kelly Grebbien each scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Eagles.
Alan Acuna scored one goal and had one assist and Alyssa Goodyear and Taylor Fine each added one goal.
Eagles goalie Kerryanne North was credited with the shutout.
The victory was the Eagles’ fourth in a row and sixth in seven games.
The win followed a 3-0 league victory over Escondido Charter two days earlier in which Gabby Borboa led the Eagles with one goal and one assist.
Alden Schneider and Taylor Fine each added one goal.
Becknell was credited with the shutout.
The Eagles improved to 5-1 in league and 8-2 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic defeated Patrick Henry 4-1 in a Western League game on Jan. 28.
Taylor Sparks and Olivia Erlbeck each scored one goal and had one assist to lead the Dons.
Catherine Cameron and Emali MacKinnon each added one goal and Emily Sanchez and Dana Dalton each contributed on assist.
The victory followed a 9-1 league win against La Jolla two days earlier in which Taylor Sparks and Sunny Dunphy each scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Dons.
The Dons improved to 4-0-1 in league and 13-3-3 overall for the season.
