Boys basketball:

Cathedral Catholic opened Western League play with two decisive wins.

In their most recent win, the Dons trounced University City 75-26 on Jan. 8.

Brandon McCoy scored 22 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Dons.

Austin Beech added 16 points and Reid Johnson contributed 10 points.

The victory followed a 68-40 win against La Jolla on Jan. 5 in which McCoy scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Dons.

Austin Beech and Johnson added 15 and 11 points, respectively.

The Dons improved to 8-4 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines defeated Sweetwater 79-45 in a SD-LA Challenge game on Jan. 9.

Jackson Strong scored 13 points to lead the Falcons and Jack Heller added 12 points.

The victory followed a 61-52 nonleague win against Mission Hills the previous day in which Jacob Gilliam led the Falcons with 18 points and 19 rebounds.

Dylan Bona added 13 points and Hayden Helfrich contributed 12 points.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 12-3.


San Diego Jewish Academy started the Firebird Classic slow but the Lions finished strong.

The Lions defeated Guajome Park Academy 58-53 the finale on Jan. 9.

Cody Brown scored 18 points and had nine rebounds and four assists to lead the Lions.

Carmelo Xia and Elliot Muller added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jordan Battaglia contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

The victory followed a 62-14 trouncing of Gompers Prep Academy on Jan. 7.

Girls basketball:

San Dieguito Academy defeated Coronado 39-37 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9

The win was the Mustangs third in a row and fifth in six games.

JoJo Davis scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Mustangs.

Emma Schneir added 11 points and eight rebounds and Claire Pupping contributed 10 points.

The victory followed a 42-26 nonleague victory over Mission Vista on Jan. 5 in which Schneir led the Mustangs with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Lena Mau added seven points and had a team-high 14 rebounds. Davis contributed seven points and nine rebounds.
