Week in sports for Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, Carmel Valley and Solana Beach

Boys basketball:

Cathedral Catholic won the Select Division championship of the Jerry Tarkanian Classic tournament at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas.

The Dons went 4-0 in the tournament, culminating with a 55-43 victory over Rock Canyon (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) on Dec. 19.

Tournament MVP Brandon McCoy scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds to lead the Dons. Reid Johnson and Austin Beech each added 12 points.

Beech was named to the all-tournament team.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 5-2.


Fresh off winning championships in its first two tournaments, Torrey Pines entered the week poised to contend for another.

The Falcons opened the Grossmont Winter with two decisive victories.

Jackson Strong scored 22 points and had seven rebounds and three assists to lead the Falcons in a 64-32 victory over Eastlake on Dec. 18.

Jacob Gilliam added seven points and seven rebounds.

The Falcons defeated La Jolla 63-48 the next day as they improved their overall record for the season to 6-1.


Canyon Crest Academy opened the Grossmont tournament with two consecutive victories as the Ravens extended their winning streak to four games.

Ryan Michaels scored 19 points to lead the Ravens to a 65-48 victory over Oceanside on Dec. 19. Tyler Elsom added 17 points and Daymian Vajda and M.J. Metz contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The victory followed a 67-62 overtime victory over Scripps Ranch in the Ravens tournament opener on Dec. 18.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 4-3.


Santa Fe Christian lost to Santana 45-39 in a Grossmont tournament game on Dec. 19.

Demitri Washington scored 10 points in defeat for SFC.

The Eagles fell to 3-4 overall for the season.

Girls basketball:

Torrey Pines lost to Mt. Miguel 63-61 in the championship game of the Winter Prep Classic on Dec. 19.

Sierra Campisano led the Falcons with 23 points 16 rebounds, 10 blocks and five steals.

Rachel Shen added 18 points and six assists and Angelina Roque contributed 11 points and three steals.

The Falcons opened the tournament with an 80–34 victory over Santa Fe Christian on Dec. 18 in which Campisano led the way with 34 points and 18 rebounds.

Roque added 19 points and Meghan Voss and Isabella Hoang each contributed 10 points.

Campisano scored 22 points and Roque added 12 points in a 56-42 victory over West Hills on Dec. 19.

The Falcons fell to 6-3 overall for the season.


Santa Fe Christian defeated Mira Mesa 44-39 in a Winter Prep Classic tournament game on Dec. 18.

Emma Dudley scored 21 points to lead the Eagles.

The victory followed a 59-50 loss to Mount Miguel in the same tournament on Dec. 16 in which California Cubel led the Eagles with 25 points.

The Eagles improved to 4-3 overall for the season.

Girls soccer:

Torrey Pines extended its unbeaten streak to start the season to six games as the Falcons played Santiago to a 1-1 tie in a nonleague game on Dec. 15.

Daniela Nelson scored the Falcons’ only goal off an assist from Callie Petrey-Juarez.

The Falcons improved to 4-0-2 overall for the season.


Cathedral Catholic lost to Long Beach Poly 3-1 in a Mater Dei Premier Invitational tournament game on Dec. 19.

Madison Mercado scored the Dons’ only goal.

The Dons went 2-1-1 in the tournament.

They opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Norco ib Dec, 16 in which Olivia Erlbeck and Kelli McCarthy each scored on goal and Mercado and Sydney Sparks each contributed one assist.

The Dons defeated Rosary Academy 3-0 the next day as Erlbeck scored two goals and Sparks added one goal.

McCarthy was credited with the shutout.

The Dons played San Clemente to a 0-0 tie on Dec. 18.

The Dons fell to 4-2-1 overall for the season.
