Oct. 17: Week in sports for Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas
Volleyball:
At a certain point it became apparent on the first day of the Hudl Southern California Invitational that Canyon Crest Academy’s volleyball team had the potential to do something pretty special.
“The coaching staff was actually texting each other back and forth saying ‘we keep playing like this, we have a shot of winning this tomorrow,’ ” Ravens coach Ariel Haas said.
The Ravens went on to win their most prestigious tournament in school history the next day.They defeated Ventura 2-0 (25-22, 25-16) in the championship game to win the Gold Division of the Oct. 14-15 tournament.The Ravens were led by tournament MVP Olivia Lovenberg. The junior setter had 29 assists and two aces in the championship game.First-team all-tournament selections Olivia Schewe and Evelyn Gonzalez (both sophomores) had 12 and nine kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter Aslyn Padre was a “serving superstar,” Haas said.
The Ravens co-hosted the 64-team tournament, which featured nationally-ranked teams, with Westview.
“I think it’s just another stepping stone towards where we want to be, which is a perennial contender,” Haas said.”We have a lots of opportunities to prove ourselves and this was just another opportunity on a national scale.”
The Ravens went 7-0 in the tournament, including a 2-1 (25-19, 11-25, 15-11) victory over defending tournament champion Desert Vista on Oct. 15.The Ravens improved to 16-7 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian went 5-2 in the tournament, culminating with a 2-1 loss to a Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) team that’s ranked No. 7 in the nation by MaxPreps.The Eagles improved to 22-7 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines defeated San Dieguito Academy 3-0 in an Avocado League West match on Oct. 14.Alexis Filippone had nine kills and Brynn Chandler had 21 assists to lead the Falcons. Jaden Whitmarsh and Emily Fitzner each had six kills and Kiara McNulty added 10 assists.The Falcons improved to 7-0 in league and 20-3 overall for the season.
La Costa Canyon defeated San Dieguito Academy 3-1 (25-8, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18) in an Avocado League West match on oct. 13.Michelle Polechonski and Morgan Lewis each had 10 kills and Camryn Machado had 42 assists to lead the Mavericks.The Mavericks improved to 5-1 in league and 16-6 overall for the season.The Mustangs fell to 1-6 in league and 23-9 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic extended its winning streak to seven as the Dons defeated Point Loma 3-0 (25-8, 25-23, 25-16)in a Western League match on Oct. 14.The victory followed a 3-0 league win against La Jolla two days earlier in which Peyton Wilhite had 10 kills to lead the Dons.Megan Faraimo had nine kills and Brennan Wilhite had three blocks.The Dons improved to 7-0 in league and 19-7 overall for the season.
Football:
Cathedral Catholic defeated Mira Mesa 45-6 in the Dons’ Western League opener. Jack Lewis rushed for 94 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries to lead the Dons and Shawn Poma rushed for 44 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. Dons quarterback Tate Haynes threw for 134 yards and one touchdown.Conner Staal had two sacks and four tackles and Kameron Camp had six tackles and one sack to lead the Dons defensively.Jordan Genmark-Heath had one interception and two tackles.The Dons improved to 7-0 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian defeated Orange Glen 63-13 in a Coastal League game on Oct. 14. Connor Whitton threw for 106 yards and one touchdown to lead the Eagles. Demitri Washington rushed for 58 yards and one touchdown on three carries. He was among 11 SFC ball carriers who combined for 357 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Luke Sanders had 11 tackles and Caleb Armendariz had one interception and two tackles to lead the Eagles defensively.The Eagles improved to 1-1 in league and 5-2 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines defeated Oceanside 32-28 in an Avocado League game on Oct. 14.Luke Duerr rushed for 130 yards on 23 carries, Sully O’Brien rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Nick Nasland rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Falcons.The Falcons improved to 2-1 in league and 5-2 overall for the season.
Water polo:
San Dieguito Academy defeated Classical Academy 13-10 in a nonleague game on Oct. 13. Matheus Gensler scored seven goals and Kekoa Wheeler had five assists and one goal to lead the Mustangs, who extended their winning streak to five games.Conner Dahl had five saves. The victory followed a 23-7 Avocado League West victory over Army-Navy two days earlier in which Sam Dumont scored six goals and had two assists to lead the Mustangs. Carl Winner scored two goals and had three assists and Wheeler scored one goal and had four assists. Dahl had seven saves and Dylan Herrera had two saves.The Mustangs improved to 1-1 in league and 16-5 overall for the season.
