Week in sports for Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas
Torrey Pines, ranked nationally by USA today, is off to a 2-0 start in Avocado League West play.
The Falcons are ranked No. 4 in USA Today’s Region 9 (Alaska, Nevada, California and Arizona), and No. 28 in the nation and No. 6 in the state by MaxPreps.com.
The Falcons opened league with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-12) victory over Sage Creek on Sept. 27. Jaden Whitmarsh had seven kills and seven digs and setter Brynn Chandler had 15 assists and nine digs to lead the Falcons.
Chiara Spain had six kills and Rita Auerbach added eight digs. The Falcons defeated Carlsbad 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-21) in a league match on Sept. 29. The Falcons improved to 2-0 in league and 11-2 overall for the season.
La Costa Canyon defeated San Dieguito Academy 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-13) in an Avocado League West game on Sept. 27.
Jamie McQuarrie had 14 kills and setter Camryn Machado had 28 assists to lead the Mavericks. Hallie McConlogue had eight digs and Sophia Tulino added six kills. The Mavericks improved to 2-0 in league and 9-4 overall for the season.
Sarah Collla had six kills and four digs, Kiani Kerstetter had 11 digs and Chloe Pejouan had six blocks for SDA.
SDA setters Kathleen Brown and Faith Kelly each had nine assists. The Mustangs fell to 0-1 in league and 21-5 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian defeated Francis Parker 3-1 (25-14, 25-12, 21-25, 25-8) in a Coastal League match on Sept. 28. Lexi Sun had 20 kills and 13 digs and Emily Hubbard had 13 kills to lead the Eagles. Eagles setter Nicolina Duhs had 39 assists.
The Eagles improved to 2-0 in league and 15-5 overall for the season.
The Francis Parker girls team defeated Pacific Ridge League: 18-25,19-25,25-20,25-18,15-7
Santa Fe Christian lost to Bishop’s 21-0 in the Eagles’ Coastal League opener on Sept. 30. Eagles quarterback Conner Whitton completed 4 of 13 pass attempts for 42 yards and rushed 31 yards on six carries.
Hank Ontiveros rushed for 60 yards on 12 carries. Caleb Phillips led the Eagles defensively with 10 tackles.
The Eagles fell to 3-2 overall for the season.
La Costa Canyon defeated Cathedral Catholic 2-1 in a nonleague game on Sept. 29. Summer Borsrack and Lindsay Fessinger each scored one goal and Madison Theodore and Cassidy Solomon each had one assist to lead the Mavericks.
LCC goalie Marina Keller had four saves.
The LCC victory followed a 4-0 nonleague win against Vista on Sept. 27 in which Kendall Nicholas scored three goals and Keller had eight saves to lead the Mavericks.
Borsack scored one goal and had one assist.
The Mavericks improved to 11-3 overall for the season.
Jayden Cunningham scored one goal for the Dons and goalie Sinead Myers had two saves in defeat for the Dons against LCC.
The Dons defeated Poway 3-0 in a nonleague game on Sept. 27. Rachel Brenk scored two goals and Isabella Mattera scored one goal to lead the Dons.
The Dons improved to 8-3-1 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines lost to San Pasqual 4-3 in a nonleague game on Sept. 30. Kristin Bitter scored two goals and Ryan Poe had three assists for the Falcons and Jaden Watkins had four saves.
The loss followed an 8-0 nonleague victory over Point Loma on Sept. 27 in which Emma Marks scored three goals and Poe scored two goals and had two assists.
Arielle Shahrabani scored two goals and had one assist and goalie Allie Joas had two saves.
The Falcons improved to 6-6-1 overall for the season.
San Dieguito Academy defeated Oceanside 19-1 in a nonleague game on Sept. 30.
Matheus Gensler scored six goals and had one assist and two steals to lead the Mustangs. Sam Dumont scored two goals and had four assists and three steals and goalie Conner Dahl had nine saves.
The victory followed a 26-9 nonleague win against San Ysidro two days earlier in which Gensler scored seven goals and had two assists and three steals and Dumont scored seven goals and had one assist and five steals. Dahl had 12 saves.
The Mustangs improved to 10-3 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic lost to Loyola 12-8 in a nonleague game on Sept. 30. Chris Sturtevant scored three goals for the Dons.
Cathedral Catholic defeated Scripps Ranch 183-193 in a Western League match at Riverwalk Golf Club on Sept. 29.
Sabrina Nguyen shot a 3-under-par 33 to lead the Dons.
