Nov. 24: Week in sports for Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas
Cathedral Catholic continued its march to a perfect season as the top-seeded Dons broke open a close Open Division quarterfinal playoff game against local rival Torrey Pines in the second quarter on Dec. 18.
They went on to defeat the No. 7 Falcons 45-7.
The Dons broke a 7-7 tie in the first quarter on Liam King’s 40-yard field goal.
The Dons scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to break the game open.
Dons quarterback Tate Haynes completed 11 of 16 pass attempts for 137 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Haynes also rushed for 32 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries.
The Dons combined for 251 rushing yards.
Jack Thompson’s 60-yard run early on set up King’s field goal. He had just two carries but led the Dons with 65 rushing yards.
Adam Eastwood rushed for 58 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries and Shawn Poma rushed for 43 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries.
Antoine Lee caught five passes for 59 yards and one touchdown, and Jack Thompson caught two passes for 25 yards and one touchdown.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 11-0. The Falcons are now 8-3.
No. 5 seeded Santa Fe Christian lost to No. 4 Lincoln in a Division III playoff quarterfinal 29-28 on Nov. 18.
Eagles quarterback Conner Whitton completed 6 of 7 pass attempts for 82 yards with one touchdown and no interception.
He also rushed for 30 yards and one touchdown on five carries.
Hank Ontiveros rushed for 42 yards on 10 carries and Kevin Loney rushed for 35 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries.
Matthew McRoskey caught three passes for 41 yards and one touchdown.
Caleb Phillips led the Eagles defensively with 20 tackles and Loney had 12 tackles.
McRoskey had one interception.
The Eagles are now 9-3 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines defeated Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25) in an Open Division first-round match of the state tournament on Nov. 17.
Daniela Fornaciari had 14 kills, Alexis Filippone had 13 kills, and Jaden Whitmarsh had 11 kills to lead the Falcons.
Kiara McNulty had 22 assists and Emily Fitzner had 17 assists.
The Falcons improved to 28-5 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian defeated Long Beach Poly 3-0 in an Open Divison first-round match of the state tournament on Nov. 17.
Lexi Sun had 25 kills to lead the Eagles and Emily Hubbard had 10 kills.
Kathleen Philo had 42 assists.
The Eagles improved to 31-7 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic defeated Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-14) in a Division II first-round match of the state tournament on Nov. 19.
Megan Faraimo had 18 kills to lead the Dons.
Bella Parise had 21 assists and Kylie Adams had 17 assists.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 26-10.
La Costa Canyon lost to Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) in a first-round Open Division match on Nov. 17.
Bronte Zlomek led the Mavericks with 12 kills and Camryn Machado had 23 assists.
The Mavericks are now 23-11 overall for the season.
San Dieguito Academy’s amazing run ended with the No. 3 ranked Mustangs losing to top-seeded Helix 8-6 in the San Diego Section Division III finals on Nov. 19.
Matheus Gensler scored three goals to led the Mustangs and Carl Winner scored two goals. Wesley Tyler and Kekoa Wheeler each had two assists.
Mustangs goalie Dylan Herrera had 11 saves.
The Mustangs two days earlier defeated Olympian 12-9 in the Mustangs first appearance in the semifinals in program history.
Gensler and Winner each scored five goals and had one assist and, Wheeler scored two goals and Tyler had three assists.
Herrera had nine saves.
The Mustangs improved to 19-13 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic lost to Vista 12-11 in overtime in the Open Division championship game.
The Dons were outscored 2-1 in the two overtime periods.
Dennis Blyashov scored eight goals to lead the Dons.
The Dons are now 15-16 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines defeated Vista 3-1 in the San Diego Section Division I championship game at Scripps Ranch High on Nov. 19.
The championship was the fourth in school history.
Skylar Sage, Chloe Downes and Ryan Poe each scored one goal to lead the Falcons.
The victory followed a 4-1 win against Valley Center on Nov. 17 in which Poe led the Falcons with two goals and one assist. Sage scored one goal and had one assist, and Arielle Shahrabani scored one goal.
Falcons goalie Jaden Watkins had two saves.
Two days earlier the Falcons defeated Patrick Henry 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
Shahrabani scored two goals to lead the Falcons, both on assists from Kristin Bitter.
Watkins had two saves.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 15-10.
