Week in Sports: Oct. 18



Torrey Pines defeated San Marcos 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-15) in an Avocado League West match on Oct. 11.

Delaynie Maple led the Falcons with 17 kills and Kendra Ham had nine kills.

Emily Fitzner had 42 assists and Macall Peed had 13 digs.

The victory followed a 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-14) league win against Carlsbad two days earlier in which Maple had 14 kills and Fitzner had nine kills and 19 assists.

Carly Diehl had 18 assists and Peed had 12 digs.

The Falcons improved to 8-0 in league and 27-3 overall for the season.


Canyon Crest Academy came from behind to defeat La Costa Canyon 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13) in an Avocado League West match on Oct. 11.

Evie Gonzalez had 14 kills, sophomore Sydney Ely had 13 kills and Olivia Schewe had 11 kills to lead CCA to its fourth win in five matches.

Sophomore setter Gracie Wood had 40 assists.

Vivienne Franke had 16 digs, Gonzalez had 12 digs and Aslyn Padre and Ely added 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Sophia Tulino had 24 kills and 15 digs and Morgan Lewis had 21 kills to lead the Mavericks.

Mia Schafer had 28 assists and Caitlin Kikta had 22 assists for LCC.

Freshman Avry Tatum had 10 kills and Maddie Wilmot had 16 digs.

The Ravens win followed a 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-19) victory over Mission Hills in a league game two days earlier in which Olivia Schewe had seven kills and Gonzalez added five kills.

The Ravens improved to 5-2 in league and 19-13 overall for the season.


LCC was coming off a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-16) league victory over San Marcos two days earlier in which Lewis led the Mavericks with 15 kills.

Schafer had 18 assists, Kikta had 10, and Tatum had four blocks.

The Mavericks fell to 5-3 in league and 23-9 overall for the season.


Cathedral Catholic extended its winning streak to 10 as the Dons defeated Scripps Ranch 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-16) in a Western League match on Oct. 11.

Madison Endsley led the Dons with 23 kills, three blocks and 11 digs.

Lindsey Miller had 11 kills and Peyton Wilhite had 10 kills.

Teresa Atilano and Kylie Adams each had 17 assists and Karenna Wurl had 21 digs

The victory followed a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) league win against Point Loma two days earlier in which Endsley had 16 kills and Miller had 10 kills.

Endsley had four service aces and four blocks.

The Dons improved to 7-0 in league and 25-6 overall for the season.


Santa Fe Christian defeated La Jolla Country Day 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16) in a Coastal League match on Oct. 12.

Sophomore Anna Aubele led the Eagles with 13 kills and Sara Jones had 12 kills.

The victory followed a 3-0 (25-22, 25-11,25-15) league win against Pacific Ridge on Oct. 10 in which Jones led the Falcons with nine kills and five blocks.

Abby Phillips had eight kills, Alice Martenson had 11 digs and Aubele had six kills and 11 digs.

The Eagles improved to 6-1 in league and 18-11 overall for the season.

Field hockey:

San Dieguito Academy defeated host Helix 4-0 in a Helix Tournament game on Oct. 13.

Sarah Parkes scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Mustangs and Ellie Silvester and Lauren Campbell each scored one goal.

Mustangs goalie Angelina Saunders had two saves and Sophomore Lily Spence had one assist.

The Mustangs lost to Newport Harbor 5-1 in their tournament opener earlier in the day.

They bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Mira Mesa in which Maya Goldschmidt scored two goals and had one assist and Julia Fumo scored two goals.

Parkes scored one goal, Gaby Vonder had two assists, and freshman Ruby Irons had one assist.


Torrey Pines defeated Mission Hills 5-0 in an Avocado League West game on Oct. 11.

Emma Richards-Smith and sophomore Faith Choe each scored two goals and Kristin Bitter had four assists to lead the Falcons.

Sophomore Carly Barry scored one goal and sophomore Erin Poe had one assist.

The victory followed a 1-0 win against San Marcos two days earlier in which Bitter scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Gracie Jimenez.

The Falcons improved to 3-0 in league and 12-3-1 overall for the season.

Water polo:

Cathedral Catholic defeated Coronado 5-3 in a Western League game on Oct. 12.

Chris Sturtevant led the Dons with four goals.


Lightning storms forced the shortening of all but one game involving local teams on Oct. 12.

Cathedral Catholic led Christian of El Cajon 21-0 in a nonleague game that was stopped in second quarter.

The Dons were awarded the victory that extended their winning streak to seven games. They improved to 7-1 overall for the season.

All Avocado League games, including the San Marcos-Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon-Mission Hills games were declared “no contest” and will not be played.

Coastal League games, including a Santa Fe Christian-Bishop’s game, were declared “no contest” too.
