Verizon Wireless announced this week that it will expand its 4G cellular network in northern San Diego County and in Riverside County.

Among the new 4G coverage areas in the North County starting Oct. 20 will be Carlsbad, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe and Torrey Highlands, according to a Verizon announcement.

Much of the city of San Diego, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Poway and Escondido are already served by a Verizon 4G network, the most advanced technology used by smart phones, tablets and laptop computers to connect with the Internet.

Verizon says its 4G network provides speeds up to 10 times faster than its 3G counterpart.

For commuters who live in southern Riverside County, the new service areas will also include Temecula and Murrieta, according to the company.
