Traffic collision on El Camino Real in Rancho Santa Fe send two to hospital

Firefighters from the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District responded to the report of a traffic collision June 24 at 8:44 p.m. in the 16000 block of El Camino Real near Calle Familia. Upon arrival, the battalion chief, who was first to arrive on scene, found an overturned vehicle off the road and on fire and called for additional resources, which included units from Encinitas and Solana Beach Fire Departments.

There were two occupants in the vehicle, both minors. The passenger was able to self-extricated from the vehicle prior to the arrival of first responders, but the driver was trapped inside the burning vehicle. Bystanders along with Rancho Santa Fe Patrol units attempted to extinguish the fire, which began spreading to nearby brush, until fire crews arrived.

Once on scene, firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and safely extricated the patient from the vehicle. Neither patient sustained burn injuries; however, both patients were transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with other traumatic injuries. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision.
