Nicholas Carlo, a second grade student at the R. Roger Rowe School, won two gold medals at the Southern California State Taekwondo Championships, held in Brea, Calif., the weekend of April 21-22.
More than 800 of the best Southern Californian Taekwondo athletes came together to determine who would qualify to compete in the Junior Olympics to be held in Dallas, Texas, this summer. Nicholas, 8, started the day with a first place win in the Forms (Poomse) competition. Poomse competition involves memorizing a series of attacking and defending movements that are judged on accuracy and technical ability.
Later, he competed in full contact Sparring (Kyoroogi) where he also took first place. These placings qualify him to compete in both events at the Junior Olympics in Dallas. Nicholas trains under Master Hyon Lee at the Taekwondo Institute in Poway.
