Football:

Cathedral Catholic for a third straight week dug itself an early hole before rallying for a comeback win.

The Dons, who staged fourth-quarter comebacks in their previous two victories, this time gave themselves plenty of time to spare in a 9-7 in a nonleague victory over Helix on Sept. 19.

The Dons trailed 7-3 early in the second quarter when quarterback Clayton Dale completed a 19-yard scoring pass to Kai Walter for the decisive score.

The Dons took a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter on Tim Semenza’s 15-yard field goal, but they relinquished the lead when Helix scored on a rushing touchdown from the 3 on its next possession.

The Dons defense shut down its opponent the rest of the way. They held Helix to just 137 yards of total offense in the game.

Dale completed six of 11 pass attempts for 75 yards with no interceptions.

Currie Thompson rushed for 66 yards to lead the Dons. Adam Eastwood gained 58 rushing yards on 13 carries.

The Dons extended their winning streak to three games as they improved their overall record for the season to 3-1.


Santa Fe Christian left nothing to chance in its quest for its first victory.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead on their way to a 42-7 victory over Rancho Christian on Sept. 20 that ended their season-opening three-game losing streak.

Carter Roberts completed five of eight pass attempts for 106 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions to lead the Eagles.

Ash Matthesius caught both scoring passes. He had three receptions for 56 yards on the day.

Sam Ray rushed for 69 yards and one touchdown on five carries and Benton Weeks rushed for 64 yards and one score on four carries.

Roberts and Reece Walker each contributed one rushing touchdown.

Gavin Dill led the Eagles defensively with seven tackles and Ray and Caleb Phillips each added six tackles.

Ray, Kevin Loney and Kyle Burns each had one sack.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 1-3.


La Costa Canyon extended its winning streak to three games as the Mavericks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 21-13 nonleague victory over Rancho Bernardo on Sept. 19.

LCC jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter as quarterback Duke Mackle ran for two touchdowns.

Mackle completed a 43-yard scoring pass to Zach Goodkin in the second quarter to send the Mavericks into the intermission with a 21-0 lead.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 3-1.


Torrey Pines snapped its season-opening three-game losing streak with a resounding 42-14 victory over Westview in a nonleague game on Sept. 19.

The win was the first under first-year coach Ron Gladnick.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 1-3.


San Diego Jewish Academy lost to San Pasqual Academy 49-21 in a nonleague game Sept. 18.

The Lions fell to 0-2 overall for the season.

Volleyball:

Cathedral Catholic won its last two matches at the prestigious Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas.

The Dons went 3-4 in the Sept. 19-20 tournament.

They opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Faith Lutheran (Las Vegas) on Sept. 19 and defeated Buchanan of Clovis (near Fresno) and Central Valley Christian of Visalia by 2-0 scores in their final two matches the next day.

Lauren Woodard had 10 kills and Jeni Clark contributed 18 assists in a 25-16, 25-15 victory over CVC in the Dons tournament finale.

Woodard had 11 kills and Brennan Wilhite and Cali Bunn each added five kills in a 25-21, 25-19 victory over Buchanan. Clark contributed 22 assists.

Woodard had 11 kills and Clark had 23 assists in the Faith Lutheran match.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 5-5.

Water polo:

San Dieguito Academy lost to San Pasqual 18-9 in an Avocado League East opener for both teams on Sept. 19.

Collin Stewart scored four goals to lead the Mustangs. Nick Johnston added one goal and had four steals and Ian Marquez contributed one goal and two steals.

The Mustangs fell to 2-7 overall for the season.

Field hockey:

Cathedral Catholic went 3-0 to win the Serra tournament on Sept. 20.

Paige Kelly scored on assist from Meg Larkin to lead the Dons to a 1-0 victory in the finals over Poway.

Dons goalie Kate Miller had three saves.

Peyton Mowery score one goal and had one assist to lead the Dons to a 2-1 victory over Rancho Buena Vista in the tournament opener.

Miller had 14 saves.

Mac Hall contributed one goal and Kate Bieraugel added one assist.

Hall scored two goals and Mowery had one goal and two assists to lead the Dons in a 5-0 victory over Mira Mesa in the semifinals.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 8-2-1.


Canyon Crest Academy defeated La Jolla 3-2 in a nonleague game on Sept. 18.

Arielle Shahrabani scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Ravens.

Kragen Metz contributed one goal and Anita Kelleher had one assist.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 6-2.
