Rancho Santa Fe sports update

Football:
Cathedral Catholic rallied from an early deficit to defeat Oaks Christian 21-14 in a battle of prep football titans in the nonleague Honor Bowl showcase at Oceanside High on Sept. 6.
The Dons were coming off a resounding 55-10 loss to Folsom in their season opener on Aug. 29.
The Dons broke a 21-21 tie late in the fourth quarter on Carter Hamilton’s scoring run from the 5.
The Dons trailed 14-7 at the intermission and didn’t take a lead until early in the fourth quarter, when Currie Thomason scored on a seven-yard run to make it 21-14.
The Dons had gone seven straight quarters without a lead before Thomason put them ahead.
Oaks Christian tied the game midway through the fourth quarter.
Thomason had three rushing touchdowns to lead the Dons.
La Costa Canyon defeated Trabuco Hills 34-7 in a nonleague game on Sept. 5.
Mavericks quarterbacks Duke Mackle led the route. He threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 95 yards and two scores.
The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the second quarter on Mackle scoring runs from the 4 and the 5. They took a 21-7 lead into the intermission.
LCC’s victory followed a 38-0 loss to Corona del Mar of Newport Beach in its Aug. 29 season opener.
After a promising start, Torrey Pines lost to Mission Hills 21-17 in a nonleague game on Sept. 5.
The Falcons opened up a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on Quinn Morimoto’s scoring run from the 2.
Brandon Hong kicked a 30-yard field goal early in the game for Torrey Pines.
Then after Mission Hills scored two unanswered touchdowns to take a 14-10 lead, the Falcons answered with Sandy Plashkes completing a 60-yard scoring pass to Jack Bailey to give them a 17-14 lead.
Mission Hills scored a rushing touchdown late in the first half to take a 21-17 in what turned out to be the last scoring play of the game.
The Falcons fell to 0-2 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian lost to Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara 20-16 in a nonleague game on Sept. 5.
The Eagles rallied from an early 7-3 deficit, outscoring their opponent 10-0 in the second quarter to take a 13-7 lead into the intermission, but they were outscored 13-3 the rest of the way.
The Eagles were led by quarterback Carter Roberts, who rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries and completed four of 11 pass attempts for 62 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Benton Weeks rushed for 76 yards on 14 carries and caught two passes for 38 yards.
Kevin Loney added 48 rushing yards on six carries and Sam Ray gained 40 yards on 14 carries.
The Eagles fell to 0-2 overall for the season. They were coming off a 19-0 loss to Sweetwater of National City in their nonleague opener on Aug. 29.
Volleyball:
It took a nationally ranked team to slow down red-hot San Dieguito Academy.
The Mustangs lost to perennial power Coronado in the finals of the Las Vegas Invitational Championship tournament 2-0 (21-25, 20-25) on Aug. 30.
Coronado is ranked 11th in the nation by MaxPreps.com
Emily Kimball, Karina Langli and Christine Giovannoni each had six kills to lead the Mustangs.
Megan Scherer contributed 11 assists and Lindsey King added eight assists.
The Mustangs advanced to the finals after impressive 2-1 wins against Skyline of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Taft of Woodland Hills (Los Angeles County) earlier in the day in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches, respectively.
The Mustangs overcame a loss in the first game in both matches. They defeated Skyline 16-25, 25-18, 15-12, and Taft 18-25, 25-14, 15-12.
The Mustangs improved their overall record for the season to 8-1.
Golf:
Torrey Pines won the prestigious fifth annual Antigua National Golf Invitational at McCormick Rancho Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Sept. 6.
Sophomore standout Muni He captured the individual championship to lead the Falcons. He shot a combined 142 in the two-day tournament to finish one stroke ahead of teammate Carolyn Zhao, who’s also a sophomore.
He overcame a five-stroke deficit on the second day, when she fired a stunning 5-under-par 67. He shot a 75 on the first day.
Zhao opened with a 2-under-par 70 and shot a 73 on the second day.
The Falcons shout a combined 589 team score made up of four players.
Sung Eun Park and Jung Min Park contributed 150 and 154 scores, respectively.
The Falcons outpaced Phoenix Xavier, which finished in second place, by 15 strokes.
