On Friday, Sept. 27, at 10:10 p.m., firefighters from the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District responded to a traffic collision near the intersection of Del Dios Highway and Rancho Drive. Upon arrival at the scene they found two cars had been involved in a head-on collision. One vehicle, which ended up on its side, had one occupant while the other vehicle had three occupants. Crews extricated two of the occupants from the vehicles. One patient was flown to a trauma center by Mercy Air. Three other patients were transported to the hospital via ambulance.
Two RSFFPD fire engines, one Escondido Fire department engine, one Encinitas Fire Department truck, three ambulances, and one air ambulance responded to the scene. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision.
