A man was seriously injured Wednesday morning when his dump truck overturned at a Rancho Santa Fe intersection, authorities reported.

Firefighters from the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District responded at 9:12 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, to the report of a traffic collision at Calle Ambiente and Via Ambiente in the community of Cielo.

When they arrived, firefighters found a dump truck, which had been heading south on Via Ambiente, had gone over the side over the side of the road at Calle Ambiente, stopping about 150 feet down the embankment.

The driver, a male in his late 30s, had jumped out of the truck just before it went over the side, suffering major injuries in the process, possibly a severed foot.

He was transported by AMR ambulance to Palomar Medical Center in critical condition.

No one else was in the vehicle and no other injuries were reported. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
