In the on-going debate on combating terrorism, we have tended to ignore one of the most powerful weapons — education. Since 2002, Julia Bolz has focused on strengthening the Afghan education system, by building and equipping schools, and developing teacher training programs and parent teacher organizations.
With funds raised by U.S. communities, Bolz and her American teammates have now built 21 large schools and repaired over 20 others, serving 25,000 Afghan students. She also has connected each Afghan school to a community in the U.S. with the hope of building bridges of understanding between the countries. This grassroots project has become a rare model of success in one of the world’s most poor and oppressed countries.
Bolz’s stories of hope and transformation not only inspire but provide important ideas for building peace and addressing extremism.
