A public opening reception will be held from 6:30–8:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3, for the Athenaeum’s 21st annual Juried Exhibition, on view in the Joseph Clayes III and Rotunda galleries through Sept. 1.

This year’s jurors — Ben Strauss-Malcolm, gallery director for Quint Contemporary Art and Jill Dawsey, associate curator for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego — selected 48 artists to participate in the show. The jurors were tasked with combing through hundreds of slides to choose the works to be featured. First, second-, and third-place honors will be awarded by the jurors at the opening reception.

Open only to artists who live, work, or have exhibited in San Diego, the Athenaeum’s juried exhibition “provides a platform for hometown artists to receive excellent exposure and to draw inspiration from talented peers,” according to Erika Torri, executive director of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. Acceptable submissions this year included 2-D and 3-D media, with the exception of functional or craft art. All submissions were completed within the past five years.
