Rancho Santa Fe native Coco Vandeweghe defeats Kiick in La Costa Professional Tennis Tournament

Coco Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe defeated Allie Kiick, 6-1, 6-2, July 30 in a first-round match in the $795,707 Southern California Open women’s tennis tournament at La Costa Resort and Spa between players with relatives who were also professional athletes.

The 21-year-old Vandeweghe is the niece of former NBA player and executive Kiki Vandeweghe. Kiick, an 18-year-old from Plantation, Fla., is the daughter of former NFL running back Jim Kiick.

Vandeweghe earned a spot in the 28-player main singles draw by winning three qualifying matches, including a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over Olga Savchuk of Ukraine Monday. Kiick received a wild card entry into the main singles draw.

Vandeweghe is 199th on the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, 100 spots ahead of Kiick.

The only seeded player scheduled to play today was eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain, who defeated qualifier Sachie Ishizu of Japan, 6-4, 6-3.

The lone night singles match will pit Daniela Hantuchova of Slovkia against Tamira Paszek of Austria.

Each of the top four seeded players — Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and Roberta Vinci of Italy — received first-round byes.
